Types of Tournaments

Just as there are differing versions of the game itself; there is also varying types of tournament that poker players can compete within. When playing poker in casino’s, gamblers can usually choose to ‘opt out’ of games whenever they want – however, in tournament play, those competing are required to keep playing until they lose all their chips.

The most common style of poker tournament is the ‘Elimination’ style. Here, the game continues until one person has won all chips, alternatively, players who lose all of their chips are eliminated – those still active often ‘switch’ tables in order to fill gaps made by those who are eliminated. Therefore, the ‘Elimination Tournament’ eventually concludes with one ‘final’ table.

A ‘Shoot-Out’ tournament is very similar in style to the ‘Elimination’ mode, yet instead of players swapping and changing tables once numbers begin to dwindle, each game is played until there is one eventual winner – with the winner of all tables meeting in a final show down at the end. (Which is played in the usual elimination manner).

‘Rebuy’ poker tournaments enable players to purchase more chips, once they lose their initial entitlement. As the prospect of being eliminated by losing all chips is essentially cancelled out, ‘Rebuy’ tournaments tend to showcase an aggressive and gripping style of play from the off. Most of these varying tournaments are recreated online – gamers of online poker often play in a similar way that they would in casino’s or during ‘bricks and mortar’ poker games. Obviously, users can choose which table they join based on its style of game, rules, current amount of players etc. However, a huge difference of online poker is that, despite the tournament rules being the same as physical poker, users cannot see their opponents, which renders a fundamental part of the game irrelevant and obsolete. Online users then, instead of picking up on facial expressions and body language to gauge an opponent’s hand, must rely on betting patterns and reaction times.
